How to Maintain and Troubleshoot Your HVAC R System

HVAC R helps regulate the temperature, humidity and air quality inside. People spend almost all of their time indoors. This is why it is so important to have a good working HVAC system. You can prolong the life of yours and keep it trouble free by maintaining it and troubleshooting it yourself. When you need to, contact your HVAC professional for help in doing more involved maintenance or repairs. Read The Thermodynamic Properties Of Refrigerants .

Maintenance

Make sure no debris is blocking or cluttering your outdoor unit. Use a cover whenever appropriate Vacuum the inside coils a few times a year.

Keep your system running at about 68 degrees in the winter and 78 during the summer. This will reduce the amount of work the system has to do to regulate the temperature and allow it to last longer. It also keeps your energy bills down.

Clean the drain line regularly. Keep it free from dirt, fungus, and algae.

Be sure to lubricate the moving parts in your HVAC R as often as necessary. If the parts are not lubricated properly it will wear out sooner than it should.

Troubleshooting

If the HVAC R stops working, turn off the circuit breaker and wait 10 seconds. Turn it back on. This should set the system back on. If not, turn off the main power. You may need to replace a broken fuse.

Once you replace the fuse, turn the power and the circuit back on. Try the system again. It should work.

Check the batteries on the thermostat. Some systems work using battery power. If the batteries are worn simply replace them and try turning the system back on.

If the furnace is not giving off a proper amount of heat switch the setting. It should be on heat mode and be turned to about 5 degrees above room temperature. Wait a few seconds and then check to see if heat blows from a register. If it does not, turn the thermostat off and make sure the panel door is closed on the furnace.

If it is not the furnace will not operate. Resent it by opening the door and turning on the reset button or by turning the gas power off. Wait a few minutes and then turn the gas back on. Your furnace should now provide heat.

If the air conditioner is not cooling the room make sure to set the thermostat to five degrees below the room temperature. Set it to cool mode and check to see if air circulates. If not, reset the circuit breaker. If it was running fine and suddenly stopped giving off cold air, make sure there is not water under the unit.

If there is, turn off the air conditioner. Let it sit for a few hours and clean the coils. Once this step is complete, turn the unit back on.
