Refrigerants used in the vapor compression cycle of refrigerators and air conditioners have been found to have a very damaging effect on the atmosphere. For this reason, it is of vital importance that refrigerants for use in these systems are non-toxic to human life. Ammonia is the only toxic refrigerant used to a large extent, however, its applications are limited to ice plants, big cold storage facilities, and packing plants.

Chemical Properties

Most refrigerants in use today are non-flammable and non-explosive to ensure the safety of human beings who come into contact with it. It should also be non-corrosive and non-irritating. The flammability and explosiveness of ammonia are very low and usually nullified by the use of precautionary measures.

Economic

The refrigerant used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems should produce maximum refrigeration and have a high coefficient performance, consuming less power to produce the desired effect. The actual cost of the refrigerant is important for economic considerations.

Other Properties

Refrigerants should have high thermal conductivity, low viscosity and low-pressure ratios and pressure differences. It should also have low power consumption and high electrical insulation.

Ammonia Properties

Ammonia is highly toxic but it has excellent thermal properties and low volumetric displacement. It has the highest refrigeration effect per kilogram of all refrigerants and comes at a low cost.
